It has been
revealed recently that the value of agricultural
farmland has increased by 50 percent causing farmers to consider selling up.
This, together with increased pressure on farming from increased fuel prices
raises questions for the future of farming in the UK. Many farmers are
considering retiring upon the sale of their land but is this good for the
UK?
Much interest has been shown by both Irish and Danish investors who face
problems with land availability in their own countries. This will surely
encourage more agribusiness to the UK.
The expected cost
for repairs in China following the 12th May
earthquake has been estimated to be around £75bn. This money is
to help re-house 5 million people, provide services such as hospitals and
schools. The aftermath of this earthquake puts China under pressure
following it's excellent initial response to the quake.
It is typical for world press to focus on the initial event and then forget
about the aftermath. In this story, the BBC follows up the event with a
comprehensive story.
China, a country
often criticised for it's use of coal as a source of energy has recently
been recognised to be the world leader of renewable
energy solutions. Projects such as the Three Gorges Dam were
only the start for this country which now has solar companies worth over
£7.5bn. Not only has China focused on renewable energy solutions for it's
own population, it will soon become the world leader in providing wind
turbines for other countries.

This story looks
at the ongoing debate regarding Genetically Modified crops in Britain. The
article focuses on the new view that the Government have taken regarding
growing more GM crops to account for the world's food crisis. It is
recognised that the global food shortage, particularly in LEDC countries
needs to be addressed in order to preserve lives. The moves have met with
considerable debate from agricultural
activist groups, scientists and even Prince Charles.

This story looks
at the issue of placing a £9m cafe at the summit of Snowdon in the Snowdonia
National Park, Wales. The development is said to serve some 350,000 visitors
to the park each year.
The case study emphasises ingenuity of design placing such a building at
1080m above sea level. Demand provided from the thriving
tourism industry in the National Park will
undoubtedly assure the construction of the cafe, and at no small cost!
